The Phoenix area has an array of fun activities ranging from hiking, shopping, festivals, to dancing downtown. The Scottsdale Arts Festival is just one of the many activities to do in the Phoenix area. This festival has been ranked one of the top festivals in the country. It would be a shame if you were uncomfortable walking and touring all Phoenix has to offer due to an ingrown toenail.

An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail curves and grows into the skin on your toe. Redness, swelling, and warmth can occur around the toenail-not to mention the pain! The ingrown toenail can even break the skin and could lead to an infection. Signs and symptoms of an infection include severe pain, redness, bleeding, and pus formation.

Home treatment options for an ingrown toenail:

Trim Your Nails Properly: Trimming your nails in a straight line without cutting them too short can prevent the painful ingrown toenails. Do not round the edges of your nail or continue to cut your nail should it become ingrown. This can make the condition worse.

Proper footwear: Wearing shoes that are too tight or too loose can cause pressure on the toes causing the nail to grow into the skin.

Soak Your Foot: Soak your foot in warm water 3-4 times per day for 15 minutes.

Massage: Massage the side of your toe after soaking to help decrease inflammation. Decreasing inflammation will help decrease the pain.

If you have diabetes, neuropathy, poor circulation, or suspect an infection consider consulting a podiatrist before trimming your nails. If your ingrown toenails are recurrent or become too painful to handle a short procedure is available for treatment.

If ingrown toenails are affecting your ability to explore all Phoenix has to offer its time to make an appointment. If you notice any changes in your foot health please consider making an appointment with Dr. Jay C. Larson at Sole Foot and Ankle Specialists in Glendale, Arizona.
