The beginning of a new school year is just around the corner, and that means it’s time for some back to school shopping!  A new pair of shoes is undoubtedly somewhere between glue and scissors on that shopping list.  Whether it’s you or your child returning to school this fall, a comfortable, sensible pair of shoes is a must.  The following are helpful tips for picking out your new back-to-school sneakers.

·  Fit is First – Shoes that are too small or too big can cause both short and long term problems for your feet.  Make sure that you get shoes that are the right size.  Your toes should be able to wiggle inside the shoes and the heel should fit snugly in the back.  If you have any questions about correct fit, don’t be afraid to ask the salesperson.

·  A Walk in Their Shoes – Take the shoes for a spin before you purchase them.  Try them on and walk around in the store for a few minutes.  This allows you to notice areas that rub or feel uncomfortable when you walk.

·  Sensibility is Stylish – Foot health and comfort should come before style when picking out your back to school shoes.  Pick a shoe that fits your needs, then work within that shoe to meet style or color preferences.

·  Materials Matter – If you or your child plan on participating in athletic activities at school choose athletic shoes made with moldable, breathable material (e.g. leather, mesh fabrics).  These materials help the shoe conform to your foot and stay breathable during exercise.

Keeping your feet happy and healthy means more time you can dedicate to school and fun!  If you follow the guidelines listed above you should have no problems picking out the perfect back-to-school kicks.  Of course, nobody can offer you more personalized and expert advice about your feet than your podiatrist.  If you have any specific questions or concerns about how your shoes should fit or the general health of your feet please contact Dr. Jay C. Larson at Sole Foot and Ankle Specialists in Glendale, Arizona.  We will be happy to get you back on your feet and in the classroom in no time!
