So far we’ve talked about the importance of proper footwear in regards to diabetes management and exercise. However, the truth of the matter is proper footwear is important in everyone’s day to day life! Wearing ill-fitting shoes can exacerbate foot problems and be a source of constant pain. Whether you are buying a new pair of shoes for yourself, a loved one or a friend this holiday season the following tips should help steer you in the right direction for healthier, happier feet!
- Go shoe shopping later in the day: Your feet swell gradually as you go about your day. This is natural and is caused by walking and standing. Trying on shoes later in the day will decrease the likelihood of buying shoes that are too small or become uncomfortable after a few hours of wear.
- Leave some room: Your shoes are not meant to fit like a pair of bike shorts. Buying shoes that are too tight will lead to discomfort and possibly some bony deformities over the years. There should be a half inch between the end of your toes and the front of the shoe and an eighth inch between your heel and the back of the shoe. Leaving this extra room will also make it easier to slip on the shoes.
- Unlike a wild horse, you shouldn’t have to break them in: If a pair of shoes does not fit comfortably in the store do not buy them under the pretense that you can break them in. Your footwear should be comfortable and offer support from the get go.
- Don’t get caught up on size: Shoe size can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Don’t be afraid to go a size up or down with a different brand. Also, our feet continue to grow as we age so an increase in shoe size may eventually be necessary. Remember, comfort and support is key!
- Take them for a spin: Before you purchase the shoes try them on in the store and walk around. After all, shoes are made for walking!
Proper footwear varies significantly from person to person. If you have any specific questions or concerns about your footwear consider making an appointment with Dr. Jay C. Larson with Sole Foot and Ankle Specialists in Glendale, Arizona. Otherwise, have a fun time shopping!
